OUGD503 - Studio Brief 1 - Yoke Leeds - Dialogue

Some third years on the course organised an exhibition and invited us to take part. I found the concept interesting so I decided to submit to them.

The brief was:

Dialogue

The objective is to encourage contributions for a week long, non profit pop up print exhibition and shop that will be held at the Leeds Corn Exchange between March 28th and April 4th 2014.

The theme of the exhibition is 'dialogue' where each creative will submit a design that will be used in a blind collaboration. Contributors must be open to their submissions being manipulated through the use of print and the match making process, that will pair the two submissions together. This will create a series of screen-printed artworks that will be displayed throughout the running of the exhibition.

Submissions

Yoke welcomes creatives from all creative backgrounds to contribute to the exhibition. We're now ready to start recieving your ideas based around the theme of 'Dialogue'.

Submissions can take any form of the theme. It could reflect directly on past conversations, forms of interaction or it could spread further afield to what you think communication is today.

First of all, I looked up the exact definitions of the word 'Dialogue' in the Oxford Dictionary, this said the following:

Dialogue

Line breaks: dia|logue
Pronunciation: /ˈdʌɪəlɒg

/

(US also dialog)

NOUN

  • 1A conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or film:the book consisted of a series of dialogues[MASS NOUN]: passages of dialogue
  • 1.1A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed towards exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem:the USA would enter into a direct dialogue with Vietnam[MASS NOUN]: interfaith dialogue

VERB

[NO OBJECT]chiefly North American
  • 1Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem:he stated that he wasn’t going to dialogue with the guerrillas
1.1[WITH OBJECT] Provide (a film or play) with a dialogue.

This lead me to put this together in a statement.

Bordering it off with two lines as vertical margins made it feel more structured.

I also had the idea to record myself saying 'Dialogue' and then turning that sound wave into a vector.

This was placed below the text and within the lined margin.
Finally I turned the type into braille to finish the design.
This design is very simple but I find the concept behind it interesting. The design is a definition of 'Dialogue', however this is written in a format that can not be read but can only be seen and felt. Below this, the word is symbolised in the form of a sound wave.

This brings together the visual interpretation of the word through the primary senses of seeing, hearing and feeling.

After submitting, I later saw the event poster outside the studio, this got me excited as it had my name on it.

When the exhibition came about, my work was printed over two I could find. It was really interesting seeing it overlapped onto someone else's, just a shame I never found out who did it or a 'dialogue' could of started.
